Certification Of Aquaculture Production Processes
|
| |
|
Mission
|
| |
The mission of Aquaculture Certification Council, Inc. is to certify aquaculture
facilities that apply Best Aquaculture Practices to ensure social and environ-
mental responsibility, food safety and traceability throughout the production
chain. ACC will also educate the aquaculture public regarding the benefits of the
Best Aquaculture Practices and the science-based technology that directs them. |
| |
To execute this mission, ACC relies on a team of independent evaluators
accredited by the council to perform site inspections for program participants. |
| |
ACC currently certifies shrimp hatcheries, farms and seafood processing plants to
Best Aquaculture Practices standards. Additional BAP standards for tilapia,
catfish and other species are under development by the Global Aquaculture
Alliance. Tilapia and catfish should be completed by year end 2008 and will
be added to the ACC certification program |
| |
| Vision |
| |
Seafood buyers face the formidable challenges of sourcing products from
remote locations around the world, importing them through stringent regulatory
barriers and selling them to ever more discriminating markets, where assurances
of freshness, flavor and other traditional quality criteria are no longer considered
enough. These premier markets expect buyers to be able to trace each seafood
lot back to its source and vouch for the myriad production and food safety
practices used throughout its production. |
| |
How can buyers meet this array of demands? Imagine a skilled team of quality-
assurance evaluators working around the world to evaluate farms, hatcheries, and
processing plants for certification according to internationally accepted standards
for environmental, social and food safety criteria. |
|
|
Add to this a network of third-party laboratories to verify the wholesomeness of
the seafood produced by certified facilities. Now link the production history of
each lot of certified seafood with its accompanying laboratory analysis and
make this data accessible online through a traceability database. The end result
is a comprehensive, credible, efficient and industry-driven solution.

ACC Solution to the Vision
|
| |
|
This multifaceted solution continues to be the vision of Aquaculture
Certification Council, Inc.
|
| |
|
Dozens of industry experts in the Eastern and Western Hemispheres
have been trained and accredited as Evaluators. Shrimp hatcheries,
farms and processing plants have been certified in compliance with
the Global Aquaculture Alliance Best Aquaculture Practices standards,
and prominent buyers have committed to join the program. ACC works
constantly to fine tune its Aquaculture Facility Certification program for the shrimp value chain and apply it to other species.
|
| |
ACC's process certification promotes management practices that reduce
the risk of product contamination and improve the image of the product
in the market. Process certification assures buyers and consumers that
the products from certified facilities were produced in a responsible manner that can be traced with the ACC approved online traceability system from the hatchery to the buyer. |
| |
Aquaculture Certification Council, Inc. also generates awareness of the
challenges facing aquaculture and provides direction in meeting those
challenges through educational programs, training seminars and the
implementation of Best Aquaculture Practices standards. |
